Help Thomas Smile Again

Thomas Price Newton—affectionately known as Thomas—has already been through so much in his short life. A kind volunteer for another local rescue spotted him sitting dazed and confused by the side of the road, clearly in need of help. Thankfully, he was rushed to safety and seen right away by a veterinarian.

The vet believes Thomas didn’t suffer trauma from a car strike, but did suffer head trauma. He was underweight by four pounds and had a wobbly, unsteady gait, likely caused by malnutrition and injury. With care, food, and love, Thomas has made incredible progress—his strength and balance are returning, and his sweet personality is shining through.

But Thomas still faces one more painful hurdle: his teeth. At his exam on October 1, 2025, our friends at Buck Creek Veterinary Clinic discovered that both of his left canines are damaged. His lower tooth is chipped, but the upper one is broken almost to the gum line. The exposed root is not only painful but also at risk of infection. The only solution is a surgical extraction.  He also has stiffness in his rear that may be from the same injury that broke his canines.  While he is sedated for his dental procedure, an x-ray will help assess any issues in his rear end. 

Unfortunately, canine extractions are complex and costly because of the deep roots that anchor them into the jaw and maxilla. Thomas’s surgery is scheduled for November 11, 2025 and is estimated between $680–$1,400, depending on whether additional extractions or cleanings are required once he is under anesthesia.
