What You Should Know
Many know The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as the organization that buys land in order to protect it, and the past year did not disappoint. At Green's Bluff in Owen County, we have protected more than 1,130 picturesque acres and recently unveiled a new 6-mile long trail through this scenic preserve. And for sheer size, TNC was part of a groundbreaking collaboration that permanently protected 3,950 acres in southern Indiana, creating the new Busseron Creek Fish & Wildlife Area. Now open to the public, this property is providing habitat for wildlife and offers recreation opportunities for all Hoosiers.

Speaking of wildlife, a decade ago, The Nature Conservancy brought a small herd of bison to our Efroymson Prairie at Kankakee Sands in northwest Indiana. More than just majestic creatures, the bison are furthering our prairie restoration efforts. Our herd—now numbering more than 100 bison—has transformed the prairie, enabling more species to thrive. Our new picnic pavilions and trails make this magical place a true destination.

All creatures, including ourselves, need clean water to survive. TNC in Indiana has a long, proud history of protecting and restoring freshwater systems, and we’ve been working diligently with the agricultural sector to improve water quality across the state. Additionally, TNC has worked with partners to remove dangerous lowhead dams from several Indiana rivers over the past several years, improving habitat for creatures such as the elusive hellbender salamander.

Lastly, we can all breathe easier because over the last five years, 140,000 trees have been planted on TNC properties and more than 4.5 million trees were planted by farmers who chose to participate in the TNC-supported Conservation Reserve Enhancement program. Just last month, TNC was instrumental in an urban tree planting project in Gary.

With your support, we can continue to protect the best of Indiana, for nature and for people.
